About The Stanford Axe Committee
The Stanford Axe Committee is a student group devoted to supporting Stanford's excellent athletics program and Stanford's rich and varied traditions. Our primary responsibility is to guard and care for the Stanford Axe, the trophy of the annual Big Game between Stanford and UC Berkeley. In addition to Axe security, the Axe Committee plays a large role in promoting school spirit by attending athletic games and events. At many events, such as football, soccer, baseball, softball, and waterpolo games, we blow the Stanford train whistle each time that Stanford scores. In addition, during football season we are on the sidelines during each game. We are in charge of the operation of a large boom cannon and care for an inflatable helmet which are located on the field.
But the Axe Committee's presence is not only felt on the athletic fields. The committee also works at Flicks, staffs University events such as Founders' Day, and puts on fun events such as a Frisbee Golf tournament. But the most exciting events the Axe Committee provides the student body are linked to our school's traditions. During Big Game week, the Axe Committee originally helped build huge bonfires in Lake Lagunita before they were banned in 1992. While we cannot put on a bonfire in the lake anymore, we still put on an equally exciting football rally with a bonfire in Arrillaga Plaza to pump up our football team before every Big Game. In addition, we hold a Big Game Countdown featuring the Stanford Train Whistle during Big Game Week. We blow the whistle every hour, for the number of Big Games in the history of the rivalry, to denote the number of hours left until the Big Game starts. We also hand out pom poms, foam axes, Go Cardinal signs, antenna balls, and buttons at various events. The Stanford Axe Committee is dedicated to increasing school spirit at Stanford by supporting Stanford athletic teams and upholding Stanford's traditions.
